Syrien #2 – Perspectives on Military and Non-military Solutions in Syria Through Past Conflict Experience

RIKO proudly presents “Perspectives on Military and Non-military Solutions in Syria Through Past Conflict Experience”. This is the second and last event in the series of seminars focusing on the different perspectives and layers in the Syrian conflict and the impact of differents actors.

What are the lessons learned in regards to previous examples of military engagement, in for instance Afghanistan?
What is the outlook for a non-military solution to the Syrian conflict?
Does one approach exclude the other?
What are the criterias for peace?

At this seminar RIKO has invited two experts whom will discuss past experiences and the possibility of military and non-military solutions to the conflict in Syria.

The experts are:
1: Defence expert Peter Viggo Jakobsen, Associate Professor at the Royal Danish Defence College as well as Center for War Studies, SDU. On this day he will will provide an insight into the armed conflict in Syria and talk about criteria’s for peace. Peter Viggo is known for his straightforward positions on subjects regarding foreign policy and his knowledge on complex security policy issues. He has dealt comprehensively with the danish involvement in the conflict in Afghanistan and he will present previous experience in relation to military solutions to conflicts.

2: Senior researcher Lars Erslev Andersen from the Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS). Lars Erslev works on international security issues and politic in the Middle East. Drawing on counter-insurgency experiences from Iraq, Lars Erslev will outline possible non-military solutions as a way out of the conflict in Syria. Further he will adress how the current international situation is making the it diffuclt to reach an agreement on such strategies.
